Vietnam songs - Jimmy Cliff

Hello, guys today we have a new topic in social studies, we are searching about what happened about the war between Vietnam and America. So we are trying to find a songs about Vietnam that about the war and we have to copy and paste the lyrics in our blog and find more information about that song.

What's the message of the song?

The lyrics of Vietnam tell of a soldier serving there who writes to friends about his return home. Instead, the soldier's mother receives a telegram notifying her of his death.  According to Cliff the song was based on an artist he knew who was drafted to fight in Vietnam: The artist was not killed but returned home psychologically transformed. Vietnam had only modest chart success, reaching number 46 in Britain however, some artist, most notably Bob Dylan, considered it the most effective of all anti-Vietnam war songs.

This message from Jimmy Cliff wanted to get across with his song from Vietnam, so the Vietnam war had to stop because the families were losing all their men. Also, Jimmy Cliff wrote this song as a support to the soldiers fighting for war.

Lyrics:

Hey, Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam
Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam
Yesterday I got a letter from my friend
Fighting in Vietnam
And this is what he had to say
'Tell all my friends that I'll be coming home soon
My time'll be up sometime in June
Don't forget, he said to tell my sweet Mary
Her golden lips as sweet as cherries
And it came from
Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam
Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam
It was just the next day his mother got a telegram
It was addressed from Vietnam
Now mistress Brown, she lives in the USA
And this is what she wrote and said
Don't be alarmed, she told me the telegram said
But mistress Brown your son is dead
And it came from
Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam
Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam
Somebody, please stop that war now
It was just the next day his mother got a telegram
It was addressed from Vietnam
Now mistress Brown, she lives in the USA
And this is what she wrote and said
Don't be alarmed, she told me the telegram said
Oh, but mistress Brown your son is dead
And it came from
Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam
Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam
Somebody, please stop it
Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam
Vietnam, Vietnam, Vietnam
What I'm saying now somebody stops that war

  1. Hi JV,
I really liked how you gave deep information on Jimmy Cliff's song, especially the part where you mention what message he was trying to get across. Maybe you could add a photo or two, but other than that this was a really good post.

  2. Hi JV, I really liked your informative post about you're song, "Vietnam". You've included a deep and brief introduction about the Vietnam War which hooks the reader into your post. Also, you've inserted a nice message about the song. You've added the embed song and the lyrics underneath which makes the post much better. Next time, you should at least include an image, which makes the text more interesting. I hope reading you're next post.
